Clothing style in Rap
Fashion and music are inextricably linked. It is not uncommon for an artist to pioneer a new trend. Between the new generation's attachment to social media and their penchant for the hip-hop genre and rap, the interaction between fashion and music has never been more important. The connection between music and fashion exists largely thanks to music videos, a modern art form that took off in the 1980s with the rise of MTV. Today, music videos are released on social media to be watched on YouTube or other platforms by millions of fans. So, what are the biggest fashion trends in hip-hop and rap music videos?
1. Fur
It's a classic look : big fur coat, ostentatious jewelry, rowdy entourage, these are three main characteristics of clothing style in rap. In Dadju's video for "Under Control" featuring Niska, the rapper enters a mansion wearing a long fur coat before launching into the song itself. In Yo Gotti's video for "Put A Date On It" featuring Da Baby, Gotti stands at the end of a long table, wearing a red coat adorned with a fur collar. The fur coat is a symbol of wealth, which is why this style fits so well into the world of hip-hop and rap.
2. Neon and fluorescent colors
From neon yellow to lime green, fluorescent colors are strongly featured in rap. Starring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, Megan Thee Stallion's "Hot Girl Summer" video is filled with women dressed in neon green, pink, blue and other flamboyant colors, with some accessories even fluorescent. In Rich the Kid's video for "Save That," children are seen dressed in neon colors, dancing in a grocery store to the rapper's music and sometimes even joining him in dancing. Fluorescent colors represent both a futuristic atmosphere and unbridled energy and enthusiasm.
3. Denim
Denim is one of those classic trends from the '90s and '00s brought back today, from oversized jeans to denim trucker caps . In the music video for Kaza's "Béni" featuring Maes, the rappers are filmed in front of suburban buildings and Maes and their entourage wear skinny , ripped jeans with oversized jackets . K Camp's music video for "Ice Cold" takes place in a 1990s-style house and again, the rapper wears ripped jeans with an oversized jacket .
4. Grillz
Finally, the “beauty” essential! The grills that rappers wear on their teeth are some of the most original jewelry you can come across. They have been popular in the hip-hop and rap community for decades. However, it's only in recent years that they've really hit the mainstream.
